The Origins of Gift Giving

Giving loved ones gifts has been a basic part of human interactions.  From the beginning, during the primitive era, people gave gifts to one another to draw peace lines in the ground.  To show that they were brethren, these primitive peoples would give each other a commodity of some kind.  Now this is not in the same way that we think of a commodity today.  Their interactions with one another were strictly utilitarian.

These people would give each other a gift that could be used in some way to better improve their lives.  That should be the standard really that we should follow when it comes to giving each other gifts. Gardening not only helps the environment, it’s also a means of cathartic release, which is why I prefer to give my loved ones garden plant holders and other things to enhance their home’s natural beauty.

It is definitely the season for planting flowers all over the United States. The phone calls keep coming in at A Rustic Garden requesting information about our most classic flower pots, the cast iron urns. These planters add so much character to your landscaping projects. Many decorators also use them as accent pieces inside the home.

The indestructible metal flower containers will last for ever unless someone steals them. It is sad but every year we have a few purchased from us to replace vessels that thieves swipe right out of their yards. No one will be taking this huge angle urn planter since it weighs 1500 lbs.

Annuals for Spring and Summer

During spring and summer, annual flowers add beauty to a garden or exterior location. However with a garden full of perennials, shrubs, and trees it’s sometimes difficult to find a location for them. To have the opportunity to appreciate annuals without uprooting your garden, garden planters or pots are a solid option.  These can be placed on your porch, driveway, or hung down from the roof, and are easy to move out once the annuals have been bitten by the first frost.

Outdoor planters are available empty, or sometimes in spring and summer come pre-filled with annuals and other flowers.

Cast iron urns will last for generations without the weather deteriorating them. Their look has been modeled after antique examples from the late 1800’s. Functionality is also important so choose a garden planter that has plenty of depth to add rich potting soil. Maybe the most important thing is to make sure the vessel has a drain hole. Your plant’s roots need oxygen to survive so draining the water is very important. Your flowers and their roots will love you for it.

Container Gardening

Growing your plants in containers allows you to enjoy gardening in a limited space where a garden might not have been expected, and can encourage you to experiment with plants that may not otherwise thrive in your particular climate. You can combine plants that help each other survive-for example, oregano will discourage insects that feed on broccoli and make beans taste better. To learn more about beneficial plant combinations and other ins and outs of container gardening, don’t forget that one of the most important gardening supplies is a good book.

There are a number of other benefits to container gardening.  Container gardening is a great way to use a unique urn or pot you might have picked up, not knowing what you were going to use it for at the time.  You may use a boot or shoe, an apple barrel, hanging baskets, buckets, or any number of other receptacles to grow your plants in.  A container garden can really dress up an entrance, balcony, deck, or other area that looks a bit sparse.
